Ryan Curatolo: A Global Jockey with an Unmatched Track Record

Ryan Curatolo’s racing career is a testament to his extraordinary talent, ambition, and relentless drive to succeed at the highest levels. From his early days in France to his meteoric rise in the United States, and his subsequent triumphs in Asia and the Middle East, Ryan has consistently proven himself as one of the top jockeys in the world.

Early Training and Success in France

Ryan’s career began at the prestigious Le Moulin à Vent jockey school in Chantilly, France, where he received first-class training. His natural ability on horseback quickly led him to secure rides in the French racing circuit, and it wasn’t long before he set his sights on international opportunities.

Breaking into the US Racing Scene

Ryan’s quest for broader horizons took him to the United States, where he made an immediate impact. Upon arriving at Calder Racecourse in Florida, Ryan won his first race just a week later. He then moved to Gulfstream Park, where his success continued, winning 14 races in his first season. This rapid rise caught the attention of Carl Lizza, owner of Flying Zee Stable, one of the top owners on the New York circuit, and Ryan became their first-call jockey.

During this time, Ryan worked with renowned trainer Patrick Biancone, who helped refine his skills and took him to Monmouth Park in New Jersey, where Ryan’s experience began to expand. By the time Ryan was 20, he had already earned an Eclipse Award and had ridden in the Breeders’ Cup. His success in the US was also marked by rides for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Sheikh Mohamed Al Maktoum.

Rising Stars in Asia: Macau, Japan, and Singapore

Ryan’s exceptional talent and competitive spirit led him to Asia, where his career took another leap forward.

Macau: A Rising Star

Ryan’s first major international foray in Asia took him to Macau, China, where he spent three years riding against some of the toughest competition in the region. His success was immediate, as he won multiple Group 1 races, including the Macau Gold Cup aboard Bobo So Cute. At just 24 years old, Ryan had already established himself as one of the top jockeys in the region, solidifying his reputation as a multiple Group 1 winner.

Japan: Record-Breaking Success

Ryan’s success in Asia continued in Japan, where he spent three months riding at various tracks, including Tokyo and Nakayama. His time in Japan was nothing short of spectacular, as he set a new record for the most wins achieved by a jockey on a short-term visa, recording 29 victories in just three months. This achievement was a remarkable feat, highlighting Ryan's adaptability and skill in one of the most competitive racing environments in the world.

Ryan’s experience in Japan allowed him to compete at a high level, riding against top jockeys in the region, and winning in some of the most prestigious races. His time in Japan further reinforced his reputation as a jockey who could thrive in any racing environment, bringing home victories from some of the toughest and most prestigious tracks in the world.

Singapore: Continued Triumph

After Japan, Ryan’s next stop was Singapore, where he spent a year riding at the Kranji Racecourse. Singapore’s racing scene is known for its competitiveness and high standards, and Ryan once again showcased his exceptional talent. He continued to add to his growing tally of Group race wins, further cementing his status as an internationally renowned jockey. His success in Singapore added yet another prestigious chapter to his already impressive career, marking another key milestone in his global racing journey.

Success in the Middle East: Qatar and Dubai

Ryan’s career then took him to the Middle East, where he spent time in Qatar and Dubai—two of the richest and most competitive racing environments in the world.

In Qatar, Ryan enjoyed significant success in 2020 and 2021, including winning the $500,000 Qatar Derby Group 1 aboard Full Moon and the Group 3 Qatar Oaks with Ex-Miss. These victories were a testament to his skill and versatility, adding to his long list of Group 1 wins around the globe.

In late 2021, Ryan moved to Dubai, where he continued his streak of high-profile victories, including a notable win in the G3 Meydan 2000 Guineas. His rides for Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum were key to his success in the UAE, as Ryan continued to prove himself on the international stage.
